Electrical imaging of axonal stimulation in the retina

چکیده

Abstract Stimulation of axons or its avoidance plays a central role for neuroprosthetics and neural-interfaces research. One peculiar example constitutes retinal implants. Retinal implants aim to artificially activate ganglion cells (RGCs) via electrical stimulation. Such stimulation, however, often generates undesired stimulation RGC axon bundles, which leads distorted visual percepts. In order establish strategies avoiding axonal it is necessary image the evoked activity in single axons. this work we electrically imaged ex vivo mouse retina using high-density CMOS-based microelectrode array. We demonstrate signal propagation tracking stimulus triggered average during high frequency (100 Hz) sinusoidal

Pattern electrical stimulation of the human retina

Experiments were conducted to study if electrical stimulation of the retinal surface can elicit visual sensation in individuals blind from end-stage retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Under local anesthesia, different stimulating electrodes were inserted through the eyewall and positioned over the surface of the retina. Subjects' psychophysical responses to ele...

Pathology of damaging electrical stimulation in the retina.

The goal of this study was to examine the characteristics of electrically induced retinal damage. A retinal prosthesis must be both effective and safe, but most research related to electrical stimulation of the retina has involved measures of efficacy (for example, stimulus threshold), while relatively little research has investigated the safety of electrical stimulation. In this study, a singl...

Imaging the response of the retina to electrical stimulation with genetically encoded calcium indicators.

Epiretinal implants for the blind are designed to stimulate surviving retinal neurons, thus bypassing the diseased photoreceptor layer. Single-unit or multielectrode recordings from isolated animal retina are commonly used to inform the design of these implants. However, such electrical recordings provide limited information about the spatial patterns of retinal activation. Calcium imaging over...

The electrical stimulation of the retina by indwelling electrodes.

Chronically implanted intraocular electrodes were used to stimulate visual cortical responses to current passage through the retina. Electrical current threshold for the light-adapted cat retina lies in the region of 30 to 100 X 10(-6) amps. for the conditions used. Dark adaptation caused a large threshold increase. Retinal excitability also decreased when electrical stimuli were delivered mor...
